New dangerous malware escapes security programs.
We have helped several clients
this week who encountered malware which got through
their security software. Many of the anti-virus programs are
having difficulty containing the vicious scripts. The primary
mechanisms for exposure are email attachments and music and video file
codecs. In affected offices, we have identified computers which
appeared to be operating normally which were infected. The
risk of this malware is severe. In one case, harvested data
was utilized to make a large unauthorized bank withdrawal.
One recent email attachment virus is
an email allegedly from UPS making claims about an undeliverable
package. The link enclosed in the email when selected installs a
virus. Please use extreme caution in opening email
attachments! We recommend that you only
open attachments you receive if you are expecting the
attachment and you recognize the particular email address.
 Another risk
is web surfing. Unfortunately, just opening a malicious page can
cause infection. Use caution visiting music & video sharing sites
and social networking sites. Some music and video downloads include
hidden scripts meant to track your activity or worse yet, harvest your
data.
It's a good time to spend extra time
on computer security. Here are some tips to protect your
company network:
- Check
firewall settings and security software.
- Install
