Windows Updates
You may notice this week that Service
Pack 2 for Windows Office 2007 and Internet Explorer 8 are now
considered "high priority" updates. These may be
downloaded and installed through Windows Update. Both offer
security and operational enhancements.
According to Microsoft, 2007 Microsoft Office suite Service Pack 2
(SP2) offers cumulative security fixes through Feb 2009 and also
includes previously unreleased fixes. Additionally, the service
pack includes operational improvements for Access, Excel, Groove,
Infopath, OneNote, Outlook, Powerpoint, Publisher and Word. For

Microsoft reports a slew of advantages with Internet Explorer 8
featuring: Accelerators, enhanced navigation, increased
performance, improved favorites and history management, instant search
and web slices. Security enhancements including user controlled
"InPrivate Browsing." This mode allows for browsing
without saving history, temporary internet files and cookies.
Additionally, "InPrivate Filtering" allows the user more control
over information which third parties can track. Enhanced delete
browsing history allows the preservation of cookies and user settings
associated with favorite sites while removing other files.
Accelerators are new tool options to perform common tasks you might do
when browsing. Instead of opening a new window to map a business
location, for example, you can now use an accelerator to do that
faster. Just highlight the term of interest and look for and
select the blue boxed arrow icon to get started. Web slices are
another new tool you can use to keep up to date. When you specify
a webpage link to be monitored, IE 8 will periodically check for
updates and notify you when changes to that link are made.
Various additional performance features were added to help users
"view sites with ease, get things done faster, and stay more
secure."

Warning:
Even though IE8 contains a compatibility view feature to accommodate
websites designed for older browser versions, you may encounter
difficulties with web-based applications by upgrading. Check with
your critical applications manufacturers prior to upgrading or contact CisCom for
