Daves' Raves

I was going to talk about iPods this month in Dave's Raves since I received one for Christmas.  But something else took all my attention away.  Windows 7 beta release became available last Friday.  My main desktop had just crashed so I thought it would be a good time to load Windows 7 and check it out.  My first impression?  It's much faster and more stable than the initial release of Vista.  In fact, it runs faster than updated Vista on the same hardware.

The user interface WIN7 looks a lot like Vista with some exceptions.  The optional Vista quick launch toolbar is gone.  You can "pin" frequently used applications to the taskbar to allow single click access.  The system tray has been revamped, making a little trickier to see what applications are running there.  There is no Windows sidebar like in Vista which probably helps with the performance increase.  Another addition is the "Action Center" which is located where the new System tray resides in the lower right hand corner of your screen.  The "Action Center" pulls a variety of information from the system and applications to let you know tasks that need to be done such as "Scan your computer for Viruses" reported from the AVG antivirus software or managing your backups and other system tasks.

The User Account Control option in Vista which was parodied in the Apple commercials ("Vista has asked permission for you to load this program ....") now offers 4 levels of protection.  Now you can control the amount and the frequency of the UAC notifications.  Getting to your Printer properties is now a little different.  Once you figure out where to go, the options are the same.  Windows 7 ships with the new Internet Explorer version 8.  I had beta tested IE8 under Vista and was not overly impressed.  I had problems rendering certain web pages.  I have not fully tested IE 8 but I was able to test Firefox, and Firefox seems to work okay.

You can download and test Windows 7 yourself by downloading and creating a DVD at
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/beta-download.aspx.  I do not recommend that you load this on your primary system as you may find some applications and drivers may not work.  And the beta will expire at some point requiring you to reload another operating system.  Be careful accessing your MP3 files since there is known bug with the WIN7 beta which will delete a few seconds on every song you play in Windows Media.  There is a patch available to fix if you search for it.

WIN7 is not a major operating system release.  Rather it's really just a better Vista.  Microsoft marketing is smartly giving it a new name instead of using Vista 2.0 which is what it really is.  This is due to all the bad press about Vista.  All in all, Windows 7 will probably be well received by Corporate America but only time will tell.  While I personally use and like Vista, it has not been well received in the market.  When Dell sells more XP systems than Vista and charges $99 MORE for the XP downgrade, that says it all!

Until next month, this has been another Dave's Raves.
